Where Speeds Become Needs

Toyota’s Timo Glock was the quickest runner as testing continued at Jerez on Monday. After Sunday’s largely dry conditions, rain fell throughout most of the day at the Spanish circuit, but Glock still managed to cover 89 laps in the TF109 on his way to setting a best time of 1m 30.979s.

With showers dominating, the conditions made for an unusually consistent damp track, which enabled the German to run through a full programme of wet weather work. Glock will continue to test for the Japanese team on Tuesday.

“Wet weather usually makes it hard to carry out comparative testing but today was a very interesting day because the track stayed consistently wet throughout the sessions,” explained Pascal Vasselon, Toyota's senior general chassis manager. “That allowed us to do some useful work on set-up and tyres so we made the most out of the running time. The TF109 continues to be reliable and we were able to carry out a full day's work, collecting some helpful data."

BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica finished second quickest in the F1.09. Unlike many of their rivals, who have endured more than their fair share of wet weather over the winter, it was the first time the team’s new car had run in the wet. And despite a brief stoppage caused by a water-activated false electrical alarm, Kubica covered 70 laps, as he evaluated his charge in the rain.

Just over a tenth adrift of the Polish driver was Nico Rosberg for Williams. Despite the rain, Rosberg completed a full race distance in the FW31, covering 114 laps.
